In the past, an audience was comprised of those who were directly in front of you. The word audience comes from the Latin audire, ‘hear.’ As technology and systems have evolved, so has the meaning of the word audience.
What is an audience? It is someone whom you have the ability to convey a message.
From directly in front of you, to being able to write to someone, to sending images, to TV, to YouTube – these days we not only have the ability to communicate to most people in the world, but we have the power to control who receives the message, through targeted campaigns.
The ability to communicate applied to your business, is arguably the most important ability of all. If you cannot communicate your available services or product, you cannot sell them, and you cannot do business.
Reaching your audience first involves deciding who your audience is. If you are a Real Estate Agent, farming a specific neighborhood, that is your audience and the most effective way to communicate to them is to send a direct mailing to every house in the neighborhood. If you are a small business, and your community is your desired audience, you can become more involved in social media and community events to get your message across.
No matter who your audience is and how you decide to communicate with them, having a plan is a crucial part of the process. Your plan should be precise but should also leave room for change. One of the most overlooked aspects of a good marketing plan is to determine how you are going to measure results. Once you measure the effectiveness of your plan, you should be able to make changes based on what is working and what is not.
